sometime last week, there was a survey conducted where americans voted for their own most irritating phrases/words becos they are used ALL THE TIME. i can't remember the actual order but these are the 5:
1. whatever
my personal gripe is not the word whatever, but the way they say it. worse, sometimes they say "i don't care". like if you ask what do you wanna have for dinner, if they have nothing in mind, they cant just say "anything will do, i have nothing in mind" they say, "anything, i don't care".
2. at the end of the day
well, i must admit i use that alot and i dont really think it's american american. i mean, i dare say loads of pple back home use this phrase.
3. you know
i hate it when pple punctuate their sentences with "you know". i mean for god's sake, if i knew, would you need to tell me?
4. actually
again, another word that i think alot of us are guilty of. we either say "actually" or we say "basically" sometimes twice in a sentence! yikes! note to self: must stop doing that.
5. it is what it is
this is really irritating. when the situation cannot be changed and pple just whine about it, they then sum it up by saying "it is what it is". worse, they say it in the same irritating tonality used with "i don't care".
and i can sum all the above 5 phrases into 2 lines that i can imagine many americans to say in one breath.
you know, actually, at the end of the day, it is what it is. oh whatever!
